Dr Abedi has moved to the Lakes from South Wales with more than a decade of experience in his résumé. "Never stop learning" is his motto. He devotes a great deal of his time to further education that was only started with his graduation from dental school in 2004 and has continued tirelessly ever since.

Amir has worked as a senior house officer in Cardiff Dental Hospital and in maxillofacial surgery in Royal Derby Hospital, followed by a year of vocational training in Brecon. He then joined Herefordshire NHS Trust's community dental service for three years. He has passed all qualifying exams to become a member of the Royal College of Surgeons of England (MJDF). He has also obtained a postgraduate diploma in sedation dentistry from Guy’s Hospital- King’s College London.

Dr Abedi then returned to general practice in South Wales for five years. Some of the major courses that he undertook during this time include a two-year diploma course in restorative dentistry at the Faculty of General Dental Practice (RCS England), a year-long certificate course in implant dentistry with Dr David Guy in Cardiff, a comprehensive orthodontic course with Dr Ian Hutchinson in Chepstow and a course in facial aesthetics with Dr Bob Khanna in Reading.

Amir loves the Lake District. Over years, this stunning part of the world has drawn him and his wife on numerous occasions to fulfil their passion for cycling, hiking, rock climbing and water sports. Moving to the Lakes, opens a new chapter in his personal and professional life.

Dr. James W Tomlinson Dr. James W Tomlinson

Specialist in Oral Surgery

James is a GDC registered specialist in Oral Surgery with more than 30 years combined experience in hospital and private dental practice in South Cumbria. Over the past 12 years he has undergone extensive training in Nobel Biocare implant systems both in the USA and in Sweden as well as Europe. In 2003 James was among the first group to complete a masters degree in Oral and Maxillofacial Implantology at Sheffield University.

He has lectured widely throughout the UK and Ireland on the subject of dental implants. James continues to be actively involved in postgraduate teaching as a part time tutor at Sheffield University School of Clinical Dentistry and also as a mentor to other dentists in the area.

Outside the practice James tries to keep fit by running , cycling and swimming but has yet to attempt a triathlon! When feeling less energetic he likes to relax by fly fishing and more recently has developed a growing interest in landscape photography.

Amanda KnowlesAmanda Knowles – Dental Nurse

Amanda was born and educated in Barrow-in-Furness and has worked with James for 26 years as a qualified dental nurse. She is a qualified Registered Dental Nurse and holds certificates in Radiograph and Impression taking. Amanda has been heavily involved in the dental implant programme and has travelled to Sheffield Dental Hospital on many occasions for additional in-depth training. Over the past 5 years Amanda has developed a particular interest in restorative and cosmetic treatment which she has found very rewarding.

Outside of the practice Amanda enjoys walking her huskies and watching her two girls play basketball.

Irene Hammond - Treatment Co-ordinator/Practice Manager and Dental Nurse


Irene has worked in Dentistry for over 30 years. She is a fully qualified Registered Dental Nurse and holds the dental radiography certificate. She has gained a broad range of dental knowledge and these skills have utilised in her role as treatment co-ordinator. Irene is responsible for keeping the practice up to date on health and safety matters. 

Irene has recently become a first time grandparent and loves spending time with her new granddaughter and the rest of her family.

Joanne Wallace – Part Time Practice Manager and Receptionist

Joanne started at the practice as a dental receptionist 20 years ago having no dental experience. Over the years she has developed her knowledge by attending many dental training courses and seminars. She has attained a diploma in secretarial procedures and administration.

Joanne spends a lot of her spare time running a local dance school competing in local dance competitions and raising money for local charities.  The rest of her time is taken up by her young family.



Sally HartSally Hart - Dental Hygiene/Therapist

Sally qualified as a Dental Hygienist from Manchester Dental Hospital in 1988 and has worked with James and his team for twenty years. She has recently expanded her role within the practice by training as a Dental Therapist studying for 2 years part time at Bristol Dental Hospital. Sally is now qualified to provide preventative and restorative treatment for children and adults. She is dedicated to providing the very best level of care possible in a relaxed environment.

In her spare time she loves cooking, gardening and painting – look out for some of her painting in the practice.

Helen Crawley – Hygienist

Helen qualified from Glasgow in 1983 and has enjoyed helping people smile since then.

She has over 35 years of experience and been with our practice since 2013.

Outside of work Helen loves anything active and spends a lot of weekends away in her camper van with papillon Alfie competing at dog agility or getting together with musical friends.

Fiona WoodsFiona Woods– Dental Nurse

Fiona qualified as a dental technician in 1991 and worked in a dental lab for 7 years.

She then worked at Furness General Hospital in the pathology lab which followed by her qualifying as a dental nurse in 2009. She now works at our practice as well as a dental lab.

Fiona is married with three grown up children.

Vanessa  SmithVanessa Smith– Dental Nurse

Vanessa lives locally in Barrow-in-Furness and has been working as a qualified dental nurse since 2014. Since qualifying, she has obtained a Dental Radiography qualification allowing her to take radiographs and also holds a certificate in Inhalation Sedation.

Currently, she works in our practice two days a week while working three days for the NHS special care service at Westmorland General Hospital. She has also undertaken a threeday implant training course at Sheffield University which enables her to assist with Implant procedures. Vanessa has gained a lot of experience in orthodontic nursing as well as General dental nursing.

In her spare time Vanessa Plays netball for a local team- Kirkby Ladies, and enjoys running.

Gabrielle ThompsonGabrielle Thompson– Dental Nurse

Gabrielle has recently moved to the area from the market town of Poulton in Lancashire, after buying a house with her partner to renovate.

She has worked in dentistry for five years and prides herself on being very friendly and caring to patients, helping them feel at ease during their visit. In her free time, Gabrielle enjoys going for walks in the Lake District and spending time with her family.

Kelsey Round – Dental Nurse Cadet

Kelsey joined the team in August this year and is currently working towards her Dental Nurse Certificate. She works at the practice 4 days a week where she is gaining ‘hands on’ experience working with Mr Tomlinson, Sally and Julie. She will be attending college one day a week for the next 18months gaining further knowledge to become a qualified Dental Nurse.

In her free time she enjoys socialising with friends and family.
